About Dinka Language
The Dinka is a group of tribes of south Sudan, inhabiting the swamplands of the Bahr el Ghazal region of the Nile basin, Jonglei and parts of southern Kordufan and Upper Nile regions. They are mainly pastoral people, relying on cattle herding at riverside camps in the dry season and growing millet (Anyanjang) in fixed settlements during the rainy season. They number around 2 million people, constituting about 5% of the population of the entire country, and the largest Ethnic tribe in South Sudan. They are black African people, differing markedly from the Arab tribes inhabiting northern Sudan; they are noted for their height, often reaching as much as seven feet. Dinka women were prized as slaves for many years, with some being sold to Arabia until as late as the 1960s (and later, by some accounts).
